Buckaroo

I have a weird relationship with “stuff”: objects, possessions, even subscriptions. Far from wanting to acquire new things, I feel like each additional object around me that isn’t a person that I love adds mental weight over time.

I try to have a rule that for each new thing I buy, I give away or sell two other things I already own. It works pretty well but takes a bit of conscious effort to stay on top of, so things still tend to build up. Every now and again, I need a big push to clear things out. I have to stop and get rid of a load of accumulated shit that I don’t need or want, and that actively detracts from my day-to-day.

It’s a bit like the old school children’s game, Buckaroo. The players take it in turns to add new objects onto the mule’s back. At some point - unpredictably - the mule’s had enough: he bucks and all the objects fly off. (Whoever added the final object to trigger the disaster loses and everyone else - if kids - squeals with laughter)

I personally find it clarifying and rewarding to relinquish attachments to the superfluous, partly to remind myself how little in life I actually need, and partly to remind myself to appreciate the things that are left more regularly. Try it - I bet it helps.
