Early Doors

My daughter woke me up at 5am today with pretty relentless screaming.

I got up to rock her back to sleep, a simple-but-not-easy task that can take anywhere from 30 seconds to 30 minutes. Luckily, this time, it was a 5 minute thing before she was snoring away in her cot, entirely detached from the chaotic howling that filled the air just moments before.

Now I'm up, I thought it's probably worth getting the day started. It's pitch black outside, and cold. There's limited movement on the streets outside, even in the busy area of North London that I live in. Birds tweeting in the bushes behind my flat are the only thing I can hear other than the rhythmic tapping of my fingers on the keyboard, and the occasional interjection of the central heating system topping up the radiators with hot water.

It's moments like this where I love getting up early. I feel like I'm stealing a march on the day - getting stuff done before the world wakes up. The calmness and quiet allows me to think in a way the hubbub of the day does not. I highly recommend it, baby daughter or not...
