Strategy Day
Every year, my team and I do a Strategy Day to reflect on the year gone by and define where we want to push ourselves harder in the year ahead.
I love it. Done well, it’s a great opportunity to reflect on the successes of the year, identify and transparently debate the areas where we fell below our high standards, and align on what we’re going to do to be even better in future.
In a career like venture capital, everything compounds over time. Small changes and continuous improvement over many years creates the Process Power that will make us all fundamentally better at our jobs.
There are two key factors to getting a good strategy day right:
- Create the space and context in which everyone from every part of the team can feel able to constructively critique how things are done. Nobody has a monopoly on ideas
- Make sure the ideation isn’t inhibited by resource or practicality constraints - yet. Build the absolute best menu of options, and then take those away to figure out how to prioritise and resource appropriately.
We do it every year and I know for sure it’s making us better as individuals and as a team. Would strongly recommend.
